Wang kŏn who in 918 overthrew the state of later koguryŏ established in north central korea by the monk kungye. Demand for higher quality porcelain increased as the goryeo dynasty emerged. Pottery and celadon had been introduced into the korean peninsula in the three kingdom age. Influenced by chinese ceramics korean pottery developed a distinct style of its own with its own shapes such as the moon jar or maebyeong version of the chinese meiping vase and later styles of painted decoration. With that and the development of tea culture and buddhism wares based on traditional and southern china song dynasty porcelain began production in goryeo.

Wang kŏn founded koryŏ in 918 at songdo modern kaesŏng north korea and in 936 established a unified kingdom on the korean peninsula. During the nearly five centuries of the koryô dynasty 918 1392 celadon was the main type of ceramics produced on the korean peninsula.
