It causes your affected skin to become thin white and wrinkly.
It usually affects the genital and anal areas.
And there are really two main things that physical therapy can help with when it comes to lichen sclerosus and lichen planus.
Lichen sclerosus ls is a skin condition affecting the skin of genitalia although it can also affect skin on other parts of the body such as the breasts shoulders upper arms and back.
Common symptoms include itching irritation and pain during sex.
These include vulvodynia vulvar vestibulitis lichen sclerosus erosive lichen planus lichen simplex chronicus chronic candidiasis yeast infections desquamative inflammatory vaginitis recurrent vaginal infections sexual transmitted infections pelvic floor dysfunction persistent arousal syndrome.
Potent topical steroids are also a first line treatment for other areas affected by lichen sclerosus.
Because the pain often has more than one cause successful treatment often involves more than one approach for example you may find that a combination of gentle care of the vulval skin medication to reduce nerve pathway pain and pelvic physiotherapy to relax the pelvic floor muscles is the most effective.
Women with pelvic floor dysfunction often also have urinary symptoms such as frequency urgency and incomplete emptying of the bladder.
